1977 115 not shifting into gear

I need help, i have a 1977 evinrude 115 model# 115793s it runs great but it doesn't want to go into forward or reverse. When you do put it into forward it chatters the remote box. Already put new cable and everything else looks good. Any ideas? This is all new to me so please bear with me. thanks clifton

If you disconnect the cable can you shift it into gear by hand or does it still not want to go? If you can put it in easily by hand it is probably something in your control box or cable. Otherwise it is probably in your lower end, likely either the gears or clutch dogs

cant do it by hand tryed it, so more and likely its in the lower unit thanks for the reply

I retried the shifting and eveything is working fine.
