Mercury outboard will not tilt/trim down

I have a 1977 150HP Mercury 1500 outboard that tilts/trims up okay, but won't go down. When trying to make it go down, I hear a click which sounds like a solenoid, but the hydraulic motor doesn't even try turning. It seems strange, as the same motor is used for up and down and up works okay. Everything was working okay yesterday. Battery is fully charged. I have checked the forums and can find some related topics, but nothing that relates directly to this problem. The service manual calls it a 'Type A' tilt/trim - with two hydraulic pistons holding the motor. Any help is much appeciated.

Re: Mercury outboard will not tilt/trim down

If it clicks then the solenoid is bad on the down circuit

Re: Mercury outboard will not tilt/trim down

Brett, If that motor is a 1877, it is an inline six, with only one trim solenoid. The down side of the motor is wired directly to the switch.

Jumper some power directly to the green wire at the trim pump. If the motor does not turn, you likely have internal trim motor problems. If it turns, the down button may be corroded away. The trim motor has an internal overload "circuit Breaker". Maybe it has some dirt or rust on it.
