sediment bowl

i have a old johnson outboard that the sediment bowl seal has failed on, can i get rid of the outdated sediment bowl and replace it with an plastic inline filter?

I am not familar with that exact motor, however, the sediment bowls on the older (sixties) 35-50HP OMC outboards were part of the fuel pump. You could not therefore get rid of them.

Model number FD-16A is a 1962 18hp Johnson.

The fuel filter part number is 308239. The gasket seal is part number 302675. Both are still available via any Evinrude or Johnson dealership.

However, to answer your question, yes, you can replace it with a inline fuel filter if you wish.
