OMC Side mount Control Box handle repair

Hi Guys,
Anyone know the trick to removing the handle?
I got the 3/16 Allen key screw out from the back, but the handle is still on solid. There is a nylon or plastic retaining ring, but it does not want to come off peacefully.
Tried tapping the geared hub, but the handle does not seem to budge.
What am I missing here?

Insert a long 1/4x20 thread bolt into the threaded hole that the allen screw came out of. Now, belt the head of that bolt with a hammer..... there'ya go.

Put the 3/16 back in and then turn 3 complete turns out. Place a punch in the head of the allen screw and tap to disengage the control handle. Take the screw out and remove the handle.
