Need some help!

Mechanically inclined but no engine experience. Got a 1983 Johnson J90MLCTE that fires only on 1 & 3. Nothing on 2&4. Switched out power packs and still nothing on 2&4. Power pack okay? Found out that stator and timer base could be the culprit. Going to replace both - difficulty level? What size is the flywheel nut? I know I need a puller. Torque to 105? Anything I overlooked?

Don't worry Service Manual is on the way.

Any Advice - greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Wait till you get the manual so you can test things and find out what the problem actually is before you start throwing parts at it.

No sense spending $300-$400 bucks on a stator only to find the real problem is another $200 part.

Do the tests, find the problem, then fix it.

Re: Need some help!

That's a great point I know, but motor is 2 hrs. away - remote lake area and basically when I go- I have to be packing - if you know what I mean. Plus, I think I would rather invest in this motor rather than chance it with a different used one - planning to keep it for a while and like the piece of mind knowing things have been replaced.
Combine that with been working my butt off and really looking forward to the long weekend.
Follow my logic at all?

Thanks

Rare, but could also be the coils. Try swapping them from the known good side to see if the problem follows them. If it does, replace them. Same holds true for the plug wires.

What is the condition of the stator? Leaking at all? As stated, it is an expensive part, and is non refundable.
