hi i need help just purchased a second hand boat with a new merc 496 and bravo one leg . i just had it to dealer to check over heating problem . while it was in there they pulled leg of and found water inside and told me it needs new gimbal bearing.went to pick it up and they gave me a bill for $2000.00 after being there for five weeks.no warr, now they have to pull leg of again because they forgot to put part in before reassembly.what is normal cost for gimbal replacment

i can't answer your question, but i think at the least ya should find a new shop. 2k and they forget to put it together proper..... that's not to impressive...

I think we need a lot more information than what is given. If they found water, it was probably a bad bellows, and probably the ujoints, and gimbal bearing were replaced along with the gear lube and possibly the input shaft seal in the drive.
That would account for a lot more parts and labor than just replacing a gimbal bearing.
It would also have been handy to mention you are in Austrailia, and I'm sure your dollar value is a lot different than ours. So 2000 may not be far off.

sorry i didnt state my address its cairns australia and our dollar is around .87.they fitted new gimbal bearing ,replaced seal,the leg has only thirty hours .they sold the leg new but with no metal o ring which seals the bellow .the metal o ring is what they have to remove and refit leg again for .sorry if i am not up with all the correct terms and part names this is my first merc stern drive . thats why i am here to learn more . one i think it should be covered by warr, and evern if it,s not coverd the bill seems e little steep.they also changed the oil and changed fuel filter. i dont mind paying for things if they are done right.
