I am having a few problems with my late 70's Mercury 115 hp motor I was hoping someone on here could help me out with.
Since purchasing my boat, I have had nothing but issues with the boat starting, running and accelerating. It always needed to be fed fuel via carbs to start and once it was started it would not idle until the mechanical advance was pushed about halfway up, making it idle at around 1,200 rpms. Also, when accelerating from a dead stop, the boat would accelerate slowly and sluggishly to about 2,800 rpms and then sort of float out at 2,800 rpms until the boat was turned side to side, then it would snap out of it, continue accelerating all the way up to 5,000 rpms and hold it all day long.
I decided after failing to pull skiers and knee boarders successfully to remove the carbs and clean them. The filters had some crap in them and there was a little sediment in the bottom of the float bowls and after I cleaned everything and re wired part of the engine (there were some cracked wires I found when removing the carbs) the boat started and idled pretty good on the hose in the driveway. When I got it on the water it ran pretty decent...better acceleration, easier starting, even better idle...until it warmed up. Then it became hard to start again and acceleration wasn't there nearly as good as it was when it was cold (when accelerating hard from a dead stop, sometimes it will pick up and go fairly good, good enough to pull a knee boarder, and other times it will fall on it's face and die) and idling wouldn't happen unless the mechanical advance was 1/4 of the way up.
Sorry this is so long but I am really getting fed up with this damn thing because I am spending more time fixing it than I am enjoying it with my family and friends! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
