May anybody identify this Mercury please?

Hi Ppl!

Got a Mercury from a friend yesterday. He told me that it's a 6hp model.
I doubt that. Everything looks too big for that power. It's a 2 cyl and it weights way more than my 6hp Johnson, thats all I can say.

On the transom mount it has a serial number that says: 09610688

Another number on the cyl-head, see pic.

Any ideas what that thing is? In my opinion it looks much more like 9.9 or 15hp.

Thanks for any help
Andy

It's a 15hp, manual start (rope) long shaft... with the alternator coils under the flywheel.... The serial number you gave is incorrect... It will be '0' followed by a letter, then 6 digits....

Hi Chris,

thank you! I doublechecked the serial number but there is no letter in it. I will upload a pic just to be sure but i have to take a camera with me. The phone has not enough quality.

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

So possibly anybody know which nozzle the carb should have? The main nozzle is a 066. Does that fit for a 15hp? Cause it looks like a 15hp and identifies by the serial number but it doesn't run like one. (Compared to the 15hp Mariner from a friend) Whats the difference between the 9.9 and 15? Nozzle only or other stuff? Any hints welcome cause I completely dismounted the carb now and have every option to modify.

Thanks for your help.

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

There should be a serial number on an aluminium disc (that looks like a freeze plug) on the side of the engine block.... Also there should be a number on the carb itself... something like WMC-???? That number will identify the carb and we'll know what engine it should be on...

No.....

There is a number stamped, in dots, on the port side of the carb. What is it?..
I have taken a couple of photos of my 15hp as examples...

This is the starbaord side of the engine... Is there a label just forward of the freeze plug with the '5' in it? That has model and serial number on it.

And this one is the side of the carb... You can just make out the dots...

Strange, that serial number is good for a 1990 model - 6 hp OR 15 hp.

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

hey chris

thanks again.. send another pic from the carb, no dotted number

the sticker with the barcode mentioned in your other pic is also missing. the only sticker i have is the one from my first post (close to the spark plugs) showing like 15mlh-alt .....

looking at the sparepart list shows that it should have the 066 nozzle (like it has) but if it's the wmc-28 carb (see the other pic) it looks more like the 10hp version... i'm so much confused... i wonder who build this engine :)

regards,
andy

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

This is a page from MERCURY'S own 'Staring serial numbers guide'... Merc part# 90-830571, revised in June 1996.

NO 6hp in 1990

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

ok... if the carb is a WMC-28, then it's a 15... Only Belgium made 15hp used the WMC-28... Main jet was 0.066... all other engines used a smaller main jet....

Well that's just dandy! How am I supposed to trust marinshopen again?

You post looks a lot like maxrules (USA and Canada), are you sure that covers belgium models?

Re: May anybody identify this Mercury please?

thank you guys very much for all your help. at least i know what i have got here... i opened up the main jet to 0.072 just to feel a little better and readjusted the carb. seems to run fine in the rain butt..can't put load on it right now. not sure about the ignition timing. left everything untouched but to be sure it would be nice to check the timing.. maybe that would fix the bad running when engine is cold (starts really nice, even when cold but got to put a gear in and go ahead with cold engine, idle is really low)...

any idea how to control the timing.. basic tools are available ;)

regards,
andy
