I am looking to purchase a 1999 Searay 180 135hp Mercury 2.0 V6 outboard. Everything has checked out except there seems to be excessive play on the propeller shaft.
We removed the prop and you can grab the propeller shaft and pull it in and out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. This seems a bit much. Does anyone know how much travel is normal????
Help please.

There is quite a lot of movement in those shafts normally if it shifts properly don't worry the movement is normal.

1/4 inch is normal. 3/4 inch is a bit much. Feels pretty loose if you're used to small outboards, though.

Check the torque on the bearing carrier nut. Might be backing out.

hope it helps

Thanks John I think I will just bite the bullet and take it to the shop and get it checked out.
