I just purchased a 1978 evinrude 6hp 6804B. I was told it was a short shaft. I read that this motor was designed for salt water which leads me to beleive that it might be a long shaft. I was planning to use it on a 12 - 14 ft. boat. Can anyone tell me whcih it is. If it is a long shaft will I have any problems.

Your help would be appreciated.

You can tell from the (secret) model number or you can measure from the inside of the transom clamp to the av plate.

15" is a short shaft, 20" is a long shaft

Re: Long shaft or short shaft?

JB,

Thanks for the information. I measured the distance from the top of the av plate to where the clamp sits on the transom. It measured 17.5 inches. I read somewhere else that a 15 inch could measure that long and a 20 inch could measure as much as 22.5 inches. Sounds like I may have a short shaft.

6804 is a 1978 short shaft
6805 is a 1978 long shaft

When they left the factory, that is. They often get changed in the field. The long shaft has a very obvious 5" extension piece above the lower unit gearcase. You can't miss it if it is there. If you don't see it, it is a short shaft.
