switch wire

i have a 1978 inline 6 cyl. 115 hp. 1150 mercury outboard ,and iam having a problem with the switch wire. iam not getting any fire from the battery to the switch. what i would like to know is could i run a new wire from switch to the battery or would it ruin something?

I think if you delve deeper you will find most of any wiring not still encased in it's second outer shell of insulation is all corroded with crumbling insulation.

It is almost guaranteed on any older merc. Unless the harnesses have been replaced.


Try pushing in on the plug on the side of the motor, maybe it has just worked loose.

I don't see why you couldn't just run some new wires, but I would suspect as soon as you try to terminate the new wire ends into the existing wiring you may find yourself with a handful of wires with no insulation (it crumbled away as you handled them) ready to short out.

Be careful.

And don't mix up + and - or you'll be out a couple/few $hundred at the first small spark.
