Default 97' 150hp Evinrude new fuel pump no alarm.

Hey guys, I have a 1997 150 hp Evinrue Intruder, model no:E150GLEUE. My old fuel pump(still VRO) started using too much oil so I replaced the pump with a new one off of ebay (supposedly brand new in the box...looked like it).

My last trip out with the old fuel pump I premixed my gas, plugged the oil line and disconnected the elect. connection. With that said I still have a little premixed in my tank. I wanted to check the "no oil" alarm on the new pump so I connected the new pump except the oil line, ran the premix through the pump and never did get an alarm. I let the motor run for about 5 minutes. I did ground out the temp wire on the head and the alarm did sound.

My question is, what can I do to test this?

My '98 Johnny 150 has a 4 wire connector on the OMS (VRO) pump. The no oil alarm is controlled (actually sensed) there. Ground the no oil sensor wire to see if the alarm sounds. if it does, you will need to troubleshoot the pump, if you can.

Thanks for reply.......Which wire is the "no oil sensor wire", is it one of the four on the fuel pump? Does anyone have the Wiring diagram/pinout for the connector going to the fuel pump?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, I think it is a tan wire with a trace of another color. If I remember correcly, the OMS pump has purple, grey, the sender wire, and one other wire. Purple is +12 accessory, grey is tach sender. The no oil sender is one of the other two,

O.K., I should be able to ground the tan wire in the harness that connects to the OMS pump and the alarm should sound. This should check the harness all the way up to the pump right?

Thanks

That will check the harness all the way to wherever you're grounding the tan wire.

Well, I got my service manual in the mail yesterday read up the best I could on testing this cuircuit. First I grounded the tan wire ya'll told me about, got the alarm. Checked for 12 volts at the purple wire, got it. I connected a piece of clear tygon on the oil inlet and could see it using oil, I just want the security of the no oil warning. It sounds like I got a bad pump to me. Is there any other checks you guys know about.
Thanks again

You have to check the tachometer circuit (grey wire in the oms amphenol). Don't let voltage get to that wire. I believe that the engine has to be running to test the no oil alarm.

Hey guys, I checked out my tach circuit and it semed to pretty much in line with the manual. I pulled the new fuel pump off this evening. The man I bought the pump from agreed to exchange it.

I reinstalled the old fuel pump (with the oil line capped) and it alarmed after about 5 minutes. Well.....then I decided to put that new one back on, nothing happened with the oil line off. I then capped the oil line off and it eventually alarmed.

My question is, This pump should alarm with the oil line removed and not capped off, right? Also, what proceedure do you guys recommend for testing the "no oil" warning?Am I going about things the wrong way?

Thanks,
Scott

Having the oil line connected properly and the engine running, I simply and gently clamp the oil line shut with a pair of vice grips which effectively shuts off the oil flow. If the VRO alarm is working as it should, the slarm goes off within a short time.

I wanted to follow up with a feedback post. I took your advice and clamped off the oil supply line and I got the alarm, although it took longer than I thought it would, it did work. So thanks for all the help, and once again the guys on this site are great.

Thanks again,
Scott
