I have a 2001 Merc 5.7 EFI I/O that has the following symptoms.

After starting and running fine, it will occasionally crank without starting. Cold, hot, after long idle doesn't seem to matter. If I push forward to full throttle, it will start with a lot of fuel smoke (black, not blue). I have been told the EFIs have a sensor that may be going bad. Is this something I can replace myself or is it best to take it in and have a tech run diags on it?

Thanks in advance!

honestly... unless you have the manuals, the diagnostic tools, and the education... the best your going to be able to do is guess at something.
You may get lucky and guess correctly the first time... but most people don't.
Your probably better off bringing it in.

I agree and have already made an appt to get it diagnosed. Figured I would get it in, spend the money instead of a bunch of time hoping to "get lucky" on what was wrong.

Thanks for the post!
