I was wondering the approximate value of this motor, running, with the original controls and airguide speedo/tach. It's a 1962 mercury 700, and it's lying in a scrapyard. I feel that if I offer the guy a hundred or 2 for it he'll sell it. what I am wondering is if they're a desirable motor, and assuming I have to dump $400 or more to restore it. am I going to get it back?....is it a good investment? Thanks in advance for any input

Investment......as in making money, not too likely. Now if you're like me though, and enjoy running older motors, then you might consider making an offer.
However keep the repair bills in mind, 400 bucks MIGHT get her running, or maybe 20 bucks for plugs might do it, OR it might be a G note, trouble with older motors is there are no absolute answers, as to HOW much it will take to get them running.
If you can do a couple of quick tests. like compression and ohm out the stator, look at the shape of the distributor cap, wireing harness etc, if they all are good, then go for it.
