Im looking in to buying a teak swim platform but most looks like they need a little love. How hard is to restore teak? Given that the parts are structurally intact and we are just talking about being our of color and such. Any hints on what to look for or how to id "bad" teak wood?

Thanks!

Re: Restoring Teak

Restoring teak is relatively simple. If it is as bad as you say sand it smooth with 80# paper, remove the sanding dust by using a good air compressor or a vacuum. A good cleaning with acetone will remove any old oil or residue left. Now it's up to you as to your choice of finish.
On a swim platform I certainly wouldn't varnish it as it will be slippery as all get out. Nothing nicer than several coats of a good teak oil though - Amazon is one of my favorites. Brings out a really nice luster in the wood.
Make sure you thin out the first and second coat so it will penetrate into the wood - makes for a good bond.
Stay away from the older Sikken's products - turns the wood a "muddy" color. It is an excellent product but I just don't like the end result.

Re: Restoring Teak

I got the platform today, did a little cleaning, might have miss a spot or 2 but will recheck tomorrow. Any other advise as what other product to use? I prefer to use oil for the wood. Saw some stuff at home depot but it had a warning that it was not meant to be used under water.
