Have an '88 Evinrude 115 hp power tilt and was just about to come up on plane when I lost all drive. I don't believe I hit anything but I assumed it was the shear pin until I went back and pulled the cover. I hear nothing engage at all when I put it in forward or reverse, even though the linkage seems ok. Motor runs fine but no drive at all. Would I hear the gears engage if it was just the pin ? And what else might it be ? Thanx.

Re: No Drive

it does not have a shear pin. you probably spun the prop i hope. the prop is built of an inner and outer metal hubs, with a pressed in rubber bushing, these get weak over time and finally fail. that a sharpie, and draw a line extending each end of the the cotter key. now try the motor in gear in the water, if the lines are not in line with the cotter key, you have a spun prop. if this is so, you can either have the prop rebuilt, or replace it. i like to have 2 props, so the trip is not ruined.

Re: No Drive

A quick check is to put it in gear and see if the prop turns, listen to the lower and see if it is making any noises.

Usually when you blow a lower you can hear the chunks in there.

Last 2 lowers I blew were in deep water at WOT, they went from previous prop strikes the caused a small fracture in the gear that grew and grew and finally under full load broke.

So put it in gear, motor off, and see what turns and what doesn't, if it is the prop slipping it will still try to turn the motor over.

Re: No Drive

Engine off, put it in gear and try to spin the prop see if it goes into gear if not it isn't the prop.

There are several things that could cause that, broken drive shaft, blew up pinion or gear, shift cable broke... start with the free stuff and go from there.

Pop the hood off and confirm the shift linkage is moving as it should.
