Default Register a used boat..who's responsible?

Well, I hate to bring this up but, as a divorce person, I don't want too much "toys" on record for me. So I really don't want to register a 30' cabin cruiser under my name. So the real question is, If I let a friend register it under his name, and if I get into an accident on the water, will the friend be held liable for it because he is registered?Just a thought,Lou

THe short answer is-yes.Also, if your "friend" decides he really likes it and wants to keep it-guess what, you are going to have a hard time proving it's yours.

Put it in my name and I promise to let you have it back when you want it.

Some states will let register it some else's name and title it in yours. But this may not help you now that I think about it.

In most, if not all states, the title, not registration shows ownership. john

Same boat I'm in. Put in under 1/2 my brothers name. This helps somewhat. But I'd think one name could be on the title, and several could be on registration/insurance? After all, like a car, the driver is held responsible for most minor incidents. Good luck.
