I got a 1988 OMC king cobra 7.4 liter 460 Engine Stern Drive. We finally pulled the boat out after a few years put a way. We had the engine started on land and it was running and went into gear. The next day we took to the water got it started and put it in to reverse and it died. It will not start again, the engine cracks but there is no spark at the disturber cap we also but a new coil think it was that but still no spark. It has a brand new battery in it. We also check the fuse in the wire in the boat they are also good. Any Ideas. By the way it is 1998 24' Four Winns Liberator.

Thanks,
Jason

try jumping a wire directly to the positive terminal on the coil, from a 12V source. Does it fire?

If you have voltage at the coil, start with a tune up. Could be the points are old and corroded, maybe even shorted. Cap and plugs too. Filters etc. Especially if it's been sitting a long time.

2 things to try to begin with.
1. Try the jumper from battery + to coil + terminals as mentioned.
2. If #1 didn't work, run a points file or some fine sand paper over the points (Both sides) and see if it fires.
If it does start after the file/sandpaper trick, then the points were glazed over. Replace them, the file/sandpaper trick is only a test, not a cure
