I'm new to boating and have a 1967 Mercruiser 80 in amazing condition. I have a minor overheating problem for which I have aquired all the needed parts and my question is this. Do I use a gasket sealer when putting the lower back together with upper and when repalcing anything with a gasket do you use a gasket sealer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

A quick search of the maintenance manual should answer that question.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I need to find a manual and buy it.

There is a link available online for the OEM manual - yours is a HUGE file, over 1 gig, but if you download it onto your hard drive, it will always be there for you.

I am not familiar with the old drives like yours, but if you are talking about mating the lower unit on the outdrive with the upper unit... if that old model is anything like the newer ones, then there is simply a rubber o ring called a quad ring, it doesn't need any sealant, just a dab of grease.

Ayuh,.....Burn it to a DVD,+ You'll still have it after your 'puter Crashes.......;)

As for the Topic,......
If I'm looking at "Machined" surfaces,...
That are in Great Shape,+ I can get them Perfectly Clean,.....
The Gasket is All that is needed.....

If I'm looking at "Cast" surfaces,...
I use only enough gasket sealer to Wet the gasket,+No More....
Or,...
If I'm using a sealent As the gasket,.... I apply a Very Thin Film,+ No More.....

I've seen Too much expensive equipment turned into Junk,...
By the Liberal application of Silly-Seal...........
