I have a 1980, 70 hp Evinrude outboard that revs to 5K when I start it with the start lever up and then by reducing the start lever I can back the RPMs down to 1500 - 2000. Once the engine warms up it idles OK but not great. Also I must engage the gear shift three-quarters or better to get the engine to run in gear or it dies. The engine idles only after running for a while and then not for long. Any and all suggestions/solutions greatly appreciated. Recently installed new plugs, new impeller and cleaned out and replaced the water jacket gaskets and thermostat. Would like to make the old girl run like new or nearly so. Thanx

Do you have a shop manual, sounds like you need to do a link and sync. The timing is very important, but getting the throttle cable and shift cable adjusted right makes a big difference. There is a stop in some of the remote control housings which is a limit for the fast idle lever. A screw from the front of the on mine. I would adjust that down a bunch! Either that or don't put the lever all the way up.

I have a SELCO manual and will investigate the throttle linkage etc. Thank you for the input.
