Default 1964 Evinrude 60HP. water pump woo's

I changed my impeller and put the lower unit back on the motor and it will not pump water. I just bought the boat and found out on the shake down run that it needed an impeller. It did not pump water before or after ithe install. Any help would be greatly appreached.

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome Cadet Chris, What makes you think it's not pumping water? The exhaust relief port on the back of the exhaust housing above the water only spits water with exhaust, no stream of water. Did you replace the impeller key? Did you twist it into the pump housing when installing it and make sure the fins are curved the correct direction?

correct direction is mute, the fins will right themselves. are you using muffs, or a barrel, to test the motor? if i'm not mistaken, the water pump has to be submerged to pick up water on that motor.

the key was replaced. according to the manual, this motor uses a flushout that sprays up the lower unit. That is what I have been using. I removed and opened the thermostats to check for clogs. both hoses completely dry and no clogs there. ran with thermos off, no water pumping.

did the water tube get in the right spot when you put it back together? You can drop the lower again and hook a hose to the water tube and see if you have a clogged line. It you are hooking it up to a flush unit then it should have water whether the pump is working or not.

I replaced the key and the impeller is going in the correct direction. A local boat shop said that there are gromets between the powerhead and the baseplate that could be bad if the motor got to hot. They said I would have to pull the powerhead to replace, do I need any speacial tools to pull the powerhead? I also need to rebuil the lower unit. Do you know if I need any speacial tools to do that and are part still made?

Thanks for the help,
Chris
