Prop slip

I recently purchased a used 17' center console with a 75HP Mercury outboard. When I accelerate to plane the motor starts to "race" without the boat speed increasing. I checked the prop to see if the hub had broken loose but everything looks fine.

Any ideas.

Re: Prop slip

Could you be ventilating the prop? You should be trimmed fully in while getting on plane.

Re: Prop slip

Is isn't always appearant that the prop hub is slipping, did you look at the front side of the hub?

Mark the prop nut and the outer hub with a felt pen or scratch a line with a screwdriver, after you have run the boat and experienced this 'slip' then look at your marks, are they still lined up?

Good idea. I'll give it a try.

Re: Prop slip

I have seen the splines worn on the hub,
allowing the shaft to spin as well.
