Force 50 stops at one throttle position

My 50hp(year unknown--probably 90-91 yr) starts and runs fine. It will rev throughout the rpm range by manually operating the throttle butterfly. However, when using the remote control, either in neutral or in gear, it will increase by about 500 rpm and then shut off. If I quickly move past this kill point it will continue to rev. The same thing happens when I manually advance the throttle shaft on the engine. I know there is a neutral start interlock switch, but this should be out of the circuit once the engine is started. Could it be the culprit or maybe the timing advance mechanism?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
