Good Day all, I have a 2000 30Hp Johnson Outboard. Even with a new or recharged battery. The starter has a hard time cranking the engine over. All battery cable connectors are clean and tight. Both at the battery and starter.

Re: Slow Cranking.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

You didn't mention the battery ground cable to the engine block, ptarmigan. That connecetion (at the block) is the one that causes most trouble.

Did you actually remove and clean all connections? Looking good and being tight is not acceptable evidence that a connection is zero ohms, which it must be to operate the starter correctly.

Re: Slow Cranking.

Thanks for the updates and tips. I did check/clean positive cables but did not check the connection at the engine for the negitive. will do that this weekend. There are times that when the starter cranks the engine it has no trouble at all. This is very intermittent.

also check you cable for swelling on nicks, and the cable between solenoid, and starter.
