Default Used Boat Advice **

Looking a a 1987 Chaparral 19'6" - Appears by the picts to be like new always stored inside etc.

Power is a Merc 4cylinder 3.7 liter - appears by the pictures that it also has it's own cooling - ie radiator cap - I know the boat name is respected - but the power plant seems under sized - is this a reliable engine ? Hours are 230 total -
asking price is $5,900 which I gotta say seems high

Thoughts Please

Sonny

It don't sound like any sort of speed demon to me.
I'd probably put the likely price of any 1987 boat in that category in the $2500 to $3000 range tops.
Check the exact model with NADA for a current value.

I can't say that I am personally familiar with those Mercruiser motors from those years, but it does sound small for an almost 20' boat.
Take the total weight of the boat into consideration vs. hp rating and compare it to other known boats to get a better idea on how its likely to perform.

It don't sound like anything I'd be too eager to jump on, especially at that price.

Do a search on the 3.7 engines... Most will tell you to run, not walk, away. ESPECIALLY at that price.

For 6 grand you can get a lot newer boat with a V6. I'd keep looking.

RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN! That powerplant isn't made anymore, parts are expensive to fix it, and it would be a HORRIBLE choice. Especially at that price.

Heck, I'd sell you my 1997 Chap 2135 (cuddy cabin) with a fuel injected 5.7 and a Bravo 3 outdrive for $10,000. So $5,900 for a 20 year old boat with an obsolete engine is a terrible price.
