When the shift rod is in the fully down position (forward gear) the connecting hole at the top swivel may be more difficult to reach. Neutral is easier.
Be sure to mark the position of the trim tab so that you can replace it where it was.
If you accidentally move the shift rod swivel, it should be no more than two turns from fully seated with the flat face facing the driveshaft when you reconnect it [see page 6-20 in the factory service manual].
Be sure to pull the two water tube sleeves down to make it easier to align when you replace the gearcase.
