Pinion and forward gear gone

I pulled my lower unit apart because my driveshaft was binding up and found my forward and pinion gear were all beat up. When in neutral the driveshaft was binding with the forward gear.What could cause this? Could a slipped shift cable cause this? Also is there anywhere to buy new gears?
