Temp gauges are aftermarket or accessory with variable resistance senders mounted on or in the cylinder heads. The sender in the cylinder head must be the correct one for the gauge and must be thoroughly grounded.
In the looper 140, the sender will be inserted in the left side of one of the cylinder heads and have a tan wire. The tan wires are also used on temperature warning switches in the cylinder head which are mounted on the right side of each head.
Very often the tachometer is not working when the rectifier is bad. Test the rectifier according to Mr. Reeves methods in the Engine FAQ Forum. Also check the rectifier's charging by voltmeter at the battery when not running vs. running.
