64 johnson 40 horse no power

i have a 64 johnson 40 horse. have it running like new until in the water in gear will not power up lift the boat just slow steady trowing speed. cleaned carb. fuel pump had some crap in it cleaned all really good. new plugs set gap good spark and compression mix fuel 50:1 all fuel lines good not pulling in air. was running good until last year first time i had it out it picked up and went right away, then i slowed down and it would not go agen. anything i am missing to do or should try? its got me and a few others confused.:confused:

I got one just like it. had similar problem too...Mine was a bad coil .motor ran great on muffs/in neutral then dogs out in gear . check your plugs-they will probably show one burning w/carbon deposits the other wet but clean. The other possibility is your fule pump (hole in the diaphram). A manual , spark tester, and compression tester will become your new best buddies:):)

start with the basics, compression and spark check. this tells you if you have a viable base.

Agreed. You are wasting your time with the fuel issue. If your compression is good, you have an ignition problem. Off with the flywheel and fix it.

Flywheel removal and reinstallation is another topic. Check back here if you need more advice on that. Do it wrong and you will destroy your motor!!!
