Hello, i know nothing about outboard motors. I have a 1978 evinrude 75 hp 3 cyl and when i put it from neutral to forward it will want to bog down and die. The only way i can really get it to go at times is to basically neutral drop it. Use the warm up lever and rev it high then slam it into gear. Obviously this is a bad thing to do. I checked all of the cylinders doing a drop test and when i pulled the plug off the top one it seemed to run better. they all spark. Also i noticed that if i choke the motor while it is running that gas will pour out of the carbs and down the plastic piece of the air cleaner. what does this mean? any help is appreciated.

I believe it means you have an air leak somewhere. Check all your fuel lines for cracks or leaks.

so wat would be causing the gas to come out like that? also, when i bought the boat the guy said that someone told him it could need a new stator and/or timer base. would these parts have anything to do with my problems. he also said the mechanic could tell by listening to it that one cylinder wasnt firing right. but who knows? any suggestions, help is appreciated. thanks guys

If it's pouring gas out the carbs, the needle valve/seat is not working or the float is not adjusted right. All it takes is a little crud to crater the needle valve/seat.

While you could need some repairs to the ignition system, you have carb problems. Follow TD's advice and have the carbs rebuilt. The business about raw fuel coming out of the carb throats leads me to believe that the floats are sticking with the needle valves on the open position.

If only one cylinder is not firing, a bad coil is a possibility. You could also have a powerpack problem or a timer base problem. The lack of ignition in one cylinder only is not likely to be a stator related problem directly, because a bad stator should affect all three cylinders. That said, I have been told by my local OMC/BRP dealer that a weak stator will sometimes cause problems in the power pack. You should probably have all of the components tested.

Since this motor is new to you, however, I think that the first thing that I would do is to have the compression checked and a general mechanical inspection (including gearbox) done. There is no sense in sinking a lot of money in a motor that is not mechanically sound. On the other hand, if it passes muster in that regard, you might have the basis for a great "runner."
