Gas tank mix up

I know this may be a real dumb question,but why wont a evinrude tank work and not a mercry tank. I took the mercury gas line and replaced the tank connection with one from a evinrude but something seems wrong,,HUH?

should work, maybe just a bad "o" ring?
I had a Mercury tank that worked fine on a 90, but not on a 50, turned out to be an old "o"ring that sealed on the 90 but wouldn't on the 50, let it suck air.

You got the flow arrow on the primer bulb still pointing in the correct direction (to the motor not to the tank)?

Other than that I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work. I have one test tank with Merc fittings and I made up an adapter which plugs into the Merc fuel connector, with an OMC fitting on the end for running Johnrudes. Works great and a lot simpler than having to mess with 2 tanks and 2 hoses!
