Due to an extremely stupid error the boat was run for about 15-25 minutes on two quarts of lube rather then the 4 that it takes to completely fill it up.
Most of that time was idling.
I idled out of a slough and everything sounded normal. I brought it up onto plane and started hearing a very high pitched sound. I don't believe it was slipping because my RPM's were normal for the speed i was traveling.
I brought it to idle and threw it in nuetral. The sound went away completely.
Idled back to the launch and the sound was still apparent. Just not as loud.
I drained the lube and checked for metal flakes. There were some very fine flakes but nothing extreme. It was half full of lube so I believe the lower unit is fine.
PCM outdrives are extremely uncommon. They were only manufactured for about two years.
This one is on a 17' Sunliner Bowrider paired with a PleasureCraft Marine 4140.
I believe the 4140 was actually made by Mitsubishi though.
The model number is PSL20. Serial# D71344
Looks almost like an OMC with the dipstick on top and cover plate with four allen bolts in there.
I was planning on taking the cover plate off to look for apparent damage to the upper gears.
I am just wondering what would be the best next step to take. Any help at all would be great!
Thanks,
David
