I recently purchased a pontoon boat with a 1988 Johnson 75 HP engine. The engine will crank (though it take a bit everytime I kill it) and once it starts, I have to adjust the idle near the throttle IOT to keep if from dying, Once I get underway, I have no problems with the engine only when I go to idle, then after about 10 seconds it will die. It is really fun trying to trailer the boat with it keep dying.

Issue:

1.Will not hold an idle for more than 10 seconds
2. Takes about 5-7 seconds to start each time (is this normal?)

Any help would be appreciated.

you either have clogged low speed jets in the carbs. or your idle speed stop screw needs to be turned up. your idle in gear, in the water should be 600-750 rpms.
