1977 70el77 70 hp outboard no forward or reverse

I have a 1977 johnson 70 hp motor that runs great but doent go into gear forward or reverse. i had a guy come out and check it and he said it was a shear pin or that the gears need to get replaced. I calledhime back and he never showed up to fix it. i want to know how to check these things out my self. I am pretty handy and can figure things out but i need some info on the motor. i need a schematic for it and also if it is electric or regular lower end. i found a few lowers end on ebay but i need to know this info first thank.

Everybody must have been gone to the lake yesterday. The first thing to check would be the prop hub to see if it has sheared. Take the nut off the prop and see if the rubber in the hub is damaged, first clue might be a nut that is not tight. Second, order a workshop manual. The real thing is best, other brands have questionable information, don't ask how I know.

There is no pin that will cause that. By not returning your call the guy is telling you he doesn't know how to go about fixing it and he's done you a favor.

First - if you start the motor, either on a flush or in the water, is it pumping water?

thank guys i will check about the prop today aso sdoes anyone have schematic for this motor. thanks

this suppose mecahnic said he had 30 year experience and that he would definately be able to get it running so i thought ok is there anyone out there that lives in chicago area that knows about this motor i would like to speak to you thanks

joe, first disconnect he shift cable at the motor and try shifting it manually. it could be as simple as a cable. or the shift linkage cames loose. there are not on line manuals. this is the manual you need for that motor

the best advice i can give you, is , don't let that guy touch your motor.
