I checked the links in TheWoodCrafter's sticky "What year is my mercury out board?", but I did not find anything definitive.
I bought the motor in the spring for my canoe and just got around to using it this week. I discovered that fuel runs out the mouth of the carb if I open the fuel shut-off valve. I dismounted the carb and opened the bowl. It was rusty inside and the needle valve (a pin with a rubber point) was sticking. The float is intact and moves freely. I cleaned out most of the rust in the bowl with sandpaper, cleaned it thouroughly & re-assembled.
Motor runs well, but still leaks fuel, so I guess I need a new needle pin? carb kit? I don't know much about carbs, so please advise.
