omc 5.7 rpm

I have 1985 21.5 Beachcraft cuddy with a omc 5.7 sterndrive 800 series and 14.5x17ss prop. Everything I read about says I should be getting 4200-4600 rpm. I can't get more than 3000 rpm wot and 30mph. the motor seems to run fine, idles at 550-600 shifts good, sounds smooth. Any help on this I would be gratefull. Thanks, John

First thing I would do is make sure the tach is accurate. I don't see getting 30 MPH at 3000 rpm and 550 to 600 is a bit low for an outdrive.
