Mercury Model 35 starting problems
Hi All,
I have just fitted a manual start 2 stroke 35HP Merucry to my boat and have problems with the pull start. After a bit of messing around with the control cables (the previous owner had taken the control unit apart rather than just disconnecting them from the engine) I managed to get it started and though it ran a little bit rough for about ten minutes it was ok.
The engine had been sitting in my garage for about 18months but was a good runner before I put it there. I had it ticking over in neutral and went to put it in forward gear when it stalled.
I tried and tried to get it started but the recoil on the started handle began to pull back rather sharply to the point where it hurt my hand. After drifting down river for a mile and eventually having to row back towing my boat with my tender I gave up.
It seemed like the compression in the cylinders was causing the recoil on the starter. Is this the case or have I set off some safety feature in the engine?
It is a 2 cylinder model with a brown, beige & cream colored stripes round it. On the cowling it says it has in gear starting protection.
Any help greatly appreciated.
