Hi Boaters,

I have been working on my 1989 Johnson 25 hp motor. I wanted to replace the impeller as I wasn't getting any water through. Now communicating with some of you here, may be there wasn't enough water in the garbage can. It is all back together, and will give it another try. Through I really want to change the impeller, and couldn't seem to drop the bottom end.

Question: if the plastic keeper on the shifting rod isn't removed will this keep the bottom end from droping down? You would think it would come down enough to place a screwdrive in the end where the stud and nut end are? Thanks for your help! Will let you know how it goes.

Does this mean you figured out how to drop the lower unit? Once you disconnect the bottom bolt in the shift linkage union all you have to do is remove the bolts hold the lower unit to the exhaust tower. Sometimes it takes a little wiggling of the gear shift and/or a little prying with a screw driver.

And yes, replace the impeller.
