1956 johnson 30 hp help needed

hey there fellow johnson owners ... does anyone out there have a source for the woodruff key on the engine crank and flywheel .... trying to find one has got me really fustrated .... for some reason mine keeps twisting off and I do belive that it is because the one I use is a smaller than the original ... any sources would be very greatly appreciated

You should be able to get one at your friendly BRP Evinrude dealer.
Key is just for alignment a clean dry crank and flywheel bore and 60 to 65 ft lbs of torque should solve your problem.

part number of the key is 302602, from a dealer, it's a special key.

After you shear a couple of them, crankshaft and flywheel damage happens quickly. If the key does not fit the slots snugly and if the tapers are not smooth, you will never keep a key in there.

As already said, the tapers must be clean and dry and a torque wrench used to tighten the nut to 60-65 ft/lbs. Failure to heed these instructions will cause the kind of grief you are now having. After it's too late, it's too late.

:) hey thanks for the info on this matter .... yep i will heed the torque instruction and the shaft key way is clean and good .... many thanks:)
