1996 Evinrude 112 sp stalls out under load
Hi Everyone,
My 1996 Evinrude 112 sp stalls out when pulling a wake boarder or skier at about 4000 rpm or so. It acts like it is running out of gas and I thought that either the gas cap was not venting or there may be some obstruction in the gas line or in the tank. The tank is beneath the carpets and not easily accessible. Or, I thought it could be a fuel pump problem. Sometimes when it does this it seems to be running on only two cylinders. The boat always starts shortly after this happens and sometimes when I ski it happens two or three times in a row and then not again. It happens with a full tank of gas or with a near empty tank of gas. It also happens when the boat is under way sometimes when not pulling a skier or wake boarder at about 25 miles per hour.
Other than this problem the boat runs fine. Some times the throttle control can not find the start position and I have to put the throttle lever/shift lever into forward gear and then back to neutral to be able to start the motor. Could this be related? Could throttle position have some effect on the stall out?
Also, when the motor stalls like this the fuel gauge drops temporarily toward empty. I thought it might be an electrical problem like the ignition switch, but the fuel gauges are memory gauges and turning off the ignition switch does not make the fuel gauge needle drop, so I am not sure what is going on.
The other day, after I had the run the boat for several miles, the motor flooded and would not re-start, after sitting for awhile, for some reason. This has never happened before. I notice there is a solenoid that must pump fuel to the carburetors instead of a baffle style choke. I thought maybe this could be malfunctioning and flooding the engine sometimes when under way, but I doubt this is happening.
Finally, I put some gas dryer in the tank thinking that water may have gotten into the tank, but it still stalls out and seems to do it more often each time I use the boat.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
