150 Optimax stalls in gear

Here's my problem. Friend's Opti runs at idle about fine, 520 to 580 rpm. As soon as we put it in gear, it dies. Though could be cold engine, but no, even after a run fishing out at sea, back in the harbour, manoeuvring is a nightmare, as it does it again, dies when we shift the lever in gear.

Spark plugs changed, nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Where are the Optimax Guru's? No ideas, or even traces of ideas?

you have a shift switch that is mounted where shift cable is hooked up switch is open when in gear closed when in neutral you can check this ? but there's not much more to check without diagnostic software.

OK, I thought about this, but was not sure about the way this switch was working.
So this switch on the gear lever. The safety one on the binacle (throttle console lever?) to allow starting only out of gear would not have the same effects if faulty, I guess.
And then software....you all use software, can you easily get it in the States, or is it like in France, a trip to the dealer/rep ?
