I just recieved a used Evinrude from my Grandfather. It was stored in a garage so I did basic maintenance to it. I flushed the carb, freshened up the spark plugs and checked the fuel filter.
The engine cranks up in 1-2 pulls but then shuts off once it runs for about 1-2 seconds. I rigged up a piece of rope to the throttle inside the engine bay, once cranked I pulled the throttle some and it ran beautifully. The water peed out of the pee valve, smoked nicely, prop ran while in gear etc.
Unfortunately, the only way to make it run is via the string -- obviously not safe enough to take out into the water.
1) I noticed that a cog on the tiller arm is missing some teeth. It seems that you have to push in the tiller arm then turn it. This causes the cog to catch and engages the throttle. (Does this make sense? First boat motor i've ever had, not 100% sure). Where can I find this cog to replace it? Could this be my problem as to why the engine won't run properly? I fiddled with the tiller arm and made it run but with the cog being broken it definitely hinders the engine.
2) The water is warm when it comes out of the pee valve. Is this normal?
3) The Rich/Lean dial is missing. I am replacing it but how do I know what a good setting is?
