Let me start by saying great forum and very useful.Now down to the problem at hand,I had a 64 Homelite 55hp for about 4 yrs (great motor).
A very nice gentleman saw me running it on the river,he had'nt seen one years and offered $850 on the spot,I turned him down ,its treated me well.so the next day I'm looking through our local Craigslist and theres a 71 johnson 60hp For Free,I'm well aware of what a free out board is probably going to entail,but I go and have a look.This thing is stripped down,no flywheel,amp,carbs,pretty much a powerhead attached to the lower unit.
I take it out to my mechanic,And just by chance he has a 70 or 72 w/ a bad powerhead,so I told him to go ahead and switch everything including the mid section(luckily the one he had was a long shaft,which i needed the one i picked up was a short)all work done he said it ran great so i called the gentleman who wanted my homelite and told him to come and get it,so we put the johnson on my 17 ft runabout and I headed for water,she ran great in the low rpms and in the high rpms for about 60 to 90 seconds and just died out, she started right up and ran at a horrible sounding idle then died and would'nt start,it would turn over it just would'nt fire.
I took it back to the mechanic he looked it over and thought it was the fuel pump diaphram so he changed it out ,and off I go back to the water,once again low rpms fine then opened her up to about half throttle maybe for 30 seconds or so,o.k. so far so i take her up to around two thirds to three quarters,about 60 to 90 seconds later died out,this time same thing it would turn over but not fire.Back to the mechanic,this time he tears down the carbs,cleans and rebuilds,again I take it out salmon fishing this is like two days ago,not wanting to chance cutting my fishing short I leave it in idle and backtroll for about 4 hrs she ran ok(maybe a little choppy but not bad) at idle,fishing now over I decide to see if his last repair fixed the problem I slowly brought the throttle back back up to about 2/3 to 3/4,once again 60 to 90 seconds later you guessed it ,I'm lookin for a tow,so now it's back at the mechanics,I guess he's checking the points.
I wil say when it is in the high rpms for that minute to minute and a half she sounds and runs very nice,Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
