Unhappy '69 evinrude shift and solenoid

I have to replace the shift and solenoid assembly in my 85 HP Evinrude. I bought a repair manual and have read through the procedure. Some specialized tools are mentioned and it seems fairly involved. I'm not a mechanic, but I can take apart and replace most bolt-ons of the average auto. Can I do this or am I getting in over my head. I can't afford to pay someone else.

Yeah, exactly what is wrong with it? No special tools are needed to just replace the solenoids. However, if you are going inside the gearcase for something else, some tools are required. Most notalby those honkin'-big snap ring pliers with extensions. You also need the drive shaft socket to properly torque the pinion nut. And of course you have to first get the bearing carrier out.
