tilt and trim problems

i have a 1991 70 hp evinrude. during my last lake trip the trim motor started going down on its own and i could not stop it. i had to pull the fuse on the motor to kill the trim motor so it would not burn up. the only tilt switch currently hooked up is on the throttle. how do i check this switch? could it be one of the fuses on the motor. i switched them to see if it would stop and it would only cotinue running in the down position when power was restarted. i aslo need to know if you can use an inexpensive switch for the tilt control on the side of the motor. can you get one at auto parts place and caulk around it? the dealer want 30 dollars for this little switch that i currently have disconnected.

Re: tilt and trim problems

If you have traced the PTT switch wires from the control back to its connector, and disconnected it, and now the problem ceases to be, then obviously the switch is faulty and will require replacing. There would be no further need to test the switch.
