178 MPH!, someone has balls!, I would assume these are not your average family 'toons. I guess if it moves, someone will want to try and make it move faster!
I assume ordinary pontoons would not hold up to the pressure? Does anyone have other pics of this 'shootout'?

I guess my posting was a little misleading.
At Lake of the Ozarks, they run a Top Gun Shootout for bragging rights for the fastest boat on the lake. Entries come from all over the US including Canada running everything from jet skis to turbine-driven off shore boats. As a result there are several dozen classes. Two years ago they even ran everything from the Miss Budweiser unlimited hydroplane to a local cruise ship. The cruise boat won his class (BFB) at 5 mph. The hydroplane won the Top Gun class at 200+ (I forget the actual speed). Last year Dave Callan won in his turbine at 209 (he has since sold that boat and didn't run this year).
I do love to see the pontoons run and this year a triple log Odyssey with twin merc 300's(?) ran the 90mph.
The top gun this year was a V-hull unit, not a 'toon.
Sorry for the confusion.

Actually it was the Bud Light 50' tunnel hull hydro running twin Sterling 1500 hp engines. They would have been faster but they had problems with their 2000 hp methanol engines and had to switch to the others.
The strangest setup I saw was a single turbo charged engine connected to two stern drives. He took headed out to race before I could see who manufacturer was.
If you look close, it is a paddle boat, with an inflatable motor. I want one! Any one know where they sale these, it would drive the German Water Police crazy.
