Lower Unit Lube Leak

Hi all,

2004 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI, with Alpha Drive.

Replaced the impeller last week and ran it for the first time on the weekend. Realized my lube monitor level is dropping rapidly while the boat is running (drops about an inch after 1.5-2 hours of operation). I'm guessing that the o-ring seal for the line that runs to the lube monitor must have shifted when I reinstalled the lower unit.

Assuming that is the case, I've purchased another seal and am going to drop the lower unit, install the seal, put new lube in and see if the leak stops. My question is, could this have caused a problem anywhere else that I should be addressing?

Thanks in advance.

Check the shift shaft seal. The play in the shaft can wear that seal. We had a similar problem with my friend boat permatex fixed that just a drop to keep it in place.

Unless you see an obvious problem, the safest thing to do is to have it pressure checked and make sure the seals are okay.
