New to the forum but have been reading alot and hope someone can help me out.
Just bought a 1983 Conroy X19 open bow (was told it was made by Glastron) with a Mercruiser 120 hp, 2.5 litre I/O. Serial #6377504. I have the original owner's manual and inside the cover someone penciled in that it has a Chevy Vega 4 cyl. engine block (140hp).
I had taken it on a test run on Nolin Lake when I bought it and engine turned right over and ran well during the 15 minute test drive.
Took it out yesterday on it's maiden voyage (for me) and the engine ran well for the first 30 minutes. We stopped the boat and let it idle while we deployed the tube and first rider. We pulled the tuber around for about 15 minutes then stopped to switch tubers, with the engine still idling.
The next person to tube was to be my girlfriend's 12 yr. old daughter. Even though it was in neutral Momma wanted the engine turned off and we all know that "If Momma ain't Happy then Nobody's Happy" so I turned it off for the safety and health of both her daughter and me . 5 minutes later I tried to start it back up but it wouldn't start. Engine would crank over but would not start. Tried 2 more times both with and without throttle forward. Let it sit for 20 minutes, tried to start again, same thing. Pushed the throttle all the way forward while cranking but still would not start (On this boat you have to pull the throttle lever out sideways while in the neutral position or it will not crank.) Would let it sit for awhile and try to start it again, both open and no throttle, but no luck (Had one of the engine covers up during this, and the temperature on the water yesterday was in the 90's). After sitting for over 1 1/2 hrs. we had to flag someone down and get a tow back to the dock. The couple who gave us the tow were very nice and friendly, wouldn't even accept money for towing us in!
There were 5 adults and 2 kids in the boat. I did notice the temp was rising alittle as we were pulling the first tuber but never got over 180 (175 is the halfway point on the temp guage on this boat). Oil pressure stayed constant.
Today the engine started on the second try and sounds smooth (sitting in driveway on the trailer w/muffs).
The person I bought it from said he was a mechanic and that the engine was good and it does look very clean. I was told the only reason he was selling it was that the engine was not big enough to pull him out of the water when he slalomed skied, but had no problem pulling regular skiers or tubes. That was okay with me as I just wanted to mainly cruise and fish out of it.
Do you think that the amount of people in the boat and trying to pull a tube put too much of a strain on the engine and shouldn't do that again or where should I start to figure out why it won't restart after running awhile? Or should I just take it to the marine dealer and let him empty my wallet?
