Hello all. I have a 1978 mercruiser outdrive thats on a mercruiser 470 motor. I believe this makes it a pre-alpha outdrive(if Im wrong let me know). The top of the out drive has a "eyehole" on the top of the cap as opposed to being flat if that helps you picture it. My lower unit had something go wrong with it and I have a complete outdrive on a parts boat that has the same "eyehole" on the cap but this outdrive is mounted to a mercruiser 165hp motor, again from the mid 70's.....can I put the whole outdrive on my 470, and if not can i put at least the lower unit on my 470's upper unit? thank you

You should be fine - I believe both engines were rated at 165 hp, so it would make sense that the gear ratio should be the same - or close enough to work fine.
