89' 40 hp lower unit

need new forward and pinion gear in lower unit does anyone know how to get the clutch dog out????? also was told i could put new gears in but if i did not have the gears shimmed i would be wasting my money. does anyone know if there is any truth to the shim deal. please help i need to know how to get clutch dog out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you need an OEM manual, and some special tools.

Almost all have shims, and they need to be right or you're wasting time and money.
